Srebrenica Genocide Memorial, Bosnia and Herzegovina

The male Bosniak population of the town of Srebrenica became the victim of a genocide in 1995, during which more than 8,000 people between the ages of 13 and 78 were murdered. The crime was carried out under the leadership of Ratko Mladić by the Army of the Republika Srpska, the police, and Serbian paramilitary forces. Around 25,000 people had previously fled to a UN base six kilometers away (shown in the pictures), but they found no protection there either. The perpetrators subsequently buried thousands of bodies in mass graves. Multiple reburials in the following weeks were intended to conceal the crimes.

Between 1940 and 1945, at least 52,000 people died in the Bergen-Belsen concentration camp (under SS control) and the prisoner-of-war camp located there (controlled by the Wehrmacht). The victims included Jews, Sinti and Roma, political dissidents, homosexuals, those defamed as “asocial” or “career criminals,” Jehovah’s Witnesses, people deported from occupied countries for forced labor, former prisoners of war, and many others.

On 5 March 1998, Serbian units subordinated to the Serbian Ministry of Internal Affairs surrounded the villages around Prekaz near Skënderaj. The aim of their offensive was the village of Prekaz and, in particular, the family of Shaban Jashari, whose sons Hamza and Adem Jashari had founded and led the first cells of the KLA (Kosovo Liberation Army) in this area. According to the Humanitarian Law Center (HLC), Serbian forces killed 59 people in Prekaz during this offensive, three in Polac, two in Llausha, two in Turipec, one in Burojë, and one in Tushilë—68 people in total, including 40 unarmed civilians. Among the civilians were 26 women and 14 men; 18 were minors and five were over 65 years old; 37 were Albanians and three were Roma. In addition, according to the HLC, two Serbian police officers were killed in the area around Prekaz. The Serbian forces not only killed civilians but also destroyed dozens of houses and displaced thousands of people. The massacre was reported in almost all media outlets worldwide and contributed to the strengthening of the KLA. To this day, no one has been brought to trial or convicted for this massacre.
